This is a super helpful tut. I actually followed the link on the WP Codex because they did a poor job of explaining how to link the child and original themes (re: template).

Hi. I followed the instructions and when I returned to WP to install, it says, "Broken themes. Stylesheet is missing". I am new to this and can't see what I've missed. Any ideas? Thanks very much...

Thanks a lot for this post! You've made it really clear and easy to follow. I end up customising the CSS of themes a lot, and every time there was an update, poof, customised CSS gone! This should be very useful. If only I'd known about this earlier.

Great post! This will save me a lot of trouble and pain! I just wish I knew about it before I lost all of my tweaks from the recent upgrade ;-)

@Stella

Got the same problem. Had to copy all manual changes to child style.
My approach. I checked the date and MD5 values to identify which files where changed compared with a default installation I did in another directory. Once you know your files you can use Windiff or any other diff/patch creater to isolate your own modification. If you do copy enough lines before and after the change.
With a little rework you now can recreated all your style definition and can put them in the child style.
Once done, you can update all the templates you used without fear to lose your own changes.
